Will TRICARE cover my Breast Pump?

Will TRICARE cover my Breast Pump?

Yes! TRICARE covers breast pumps and breast pump supplies for eligible new mothers, including mothers who adopt an infant and plan to breastfeed. TRICARE permits the breast pump and supplies to be supplied before or after the delivery of the baby.

The benefit is available under all TRICARE plans including TRICARE Prime, TRICARE Select, the US Family Health Plan, TRICARE Reserve Select; and TRICARE is extended regardless of the sponsor’s duty status (active duty, retired, Guard/Reserve).

TRICARE provides coverage for different types of breast pumps depending on the situation with both the mother and baby. All new mothers are covered for one manual or standard electric breast pump (not both) per birth. If medically required, TRICARE will cover the cost of an electric hospital-grade breast pump and supplies. Medical necessity for an electric hospital-grade breast pump can include when the mother and child are separated by illness, or when the child is unable to breastfeed for medical reasons.

In addition to the breast pump itself, TRICARE covers a variety of associated supplies including:
• Two breast pump kits per pregnancy
• Bottles and bottle caps
• Storage bags
• Tubing and tubing adaptors
• Standard power adapters
• Locking rings
• Shield/splash protectors

Tricare will provide coverage on resupply of these items for up to 36 month after the birth of the baby.

A prescription from a TRICARE-authorized physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, or nurse midwife is required. This prescription must specify the type (manual or standard electric) of breast pump but it does not need to specify any certain brand, model or style. Breast pumps and supplies covered by TRICARE can be provided from a medical supply provider like us.
