Medications can help women stay healthy while they are pregnant and also breastfeeding when it is more likely that they could get themselves or their baby sick. We are going to provide a list of medications that you can use for a variety of symptoms and illnesses. All of these are safe for you and your baby, but still look at the labels for corrects dosages. If you have any questions it is best to contact your physician with more questions or concerns.

Safe Medications

Acne

• Clindamycin
• Tropical Erythromycin

Back Pain and Other Pains

• Tylenol (Regular or Extra strength)
• Bengay
• Biofreeze
• Icy Hot
• Thermocare

Constipation and Gas

• Colace, Miralax, Fleets, Fibercon, and Metamucil
• Bean O, Gas-X, Mylicon, and Phazyme

Hemorrhoids

• Anusol/Anusol H.C. (RX: Analapram 2.5%)
• Hydrocortisone OTC
• Preparation H, Tucks Vaseline lotion applied to tissue

Rash

• Benadryl
• 1% Hydrocortisone Cream

Cough Medicines and Nasal Sprays

• Saline Nasal Spray
• Cough drops
• Mucinex
• Robitussin (Plain)

Colds and Allergies

• Benadryl, Claritin, and Zyrtec (Plain formulas)
• Mucinex (guaifenesin)
• Vicks Vapor Rub
• Sudafed, Sudafed-12 Hour, and Tylenol Cold & Sinus should be avoided if you have problems with blood pressure or there is an abnormal fetal heart rate. We recommend that you do not take for more than three consecutive days.

Headaches

• Cold Compress
• Tylenol (Regular or Extra strength)
• Acetaminophen

Sleep Aids

• Benadryl
• Chamomile Tea
• Unisom, Tylenol PM
• Warm milk (Add vanilla/sugar for flavor)

Avoid

There are several medications that you should avoid all together if you are pregnant, which could cause you or your baby harm and could potentially be fatal. Here is the list of medications that you will need to avoid taking.

• Accutane
• Retin-A
• Tetracycline
• Minocycline
• 1 day creams for yeast infections
• Cipro
• Levaquin
• Ibuprofen & Excendrin
• Aspirin
• Like mentioned above, avoid Sudafed, Sudafed-12 Hour, and Tylenol Cold & Sinus if you have problems with blood pressure or there is an abnormal fetal heart rate. Do NOT take for more than three consecutive days.
